Dr. Fred on ADDICTION » Common questions
Q. What’s the difference between somebody who enjoys sex and a sex addict?

A. There are many different levels of sex over-usage problems.

It becomes a problem when it adversely interferes with one's life. Often one has a 'problem' when others are aware that there is some problem, but this type of person can have minimal insight into the total impact.

A sex addiction disorder is present when somebody uses excessive and/or frequent sexual encounters for gratification despite awareness of associated negative consequences directly or indirectly related to its pursuit.

There are usually many efforts that the addict has made to control, limit or eliminate its pervasiveness, and these are frequently unsuccessful. The outcomes can be devastating and are often accompanied by varying (and sometimes overwhelming) levels of denial that there is an issue at all. Serious medical problems and relationship difficulties often occur and employment consequences or the neglect of important responsibilities may ensue.
